Jaw pain, headaches, facial muscle tension, and teeth grinding can affect your comfort, sleep, and everyday activities. At Spring Dental, we provide personalized TMJ therapy designed to identify the cause of your symptoms and recommend conservative treatment options that fit your needs. Depending on your diagnosis, your treatment plan may include a custom nightguard, EMFACE®, or other therapies to support healthier jaw function.
The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your lower jaw to your skull and allow you to speak, chew, yawn, and move your mouth comfortably. When these joints or the surrounding muscles become irritated or strained, everyday activities may become uncomfortable.
TMJ disorders can develop for many different reasons. Some patients experience symptoms because of nighttime grinding or clenching, while others develop discomfort due to muscle tension, arthritis, bite changes, previous injury, or joint inflammation. Because several conditions can produce similar symptoms, a professional evaluation is important before determining the most appropriate treatment.
Common symptoms may include:
Jaw soreness or tenderness
Clicking or popping sounds
Difficulty opening or closing the mouth comfortably
Facial muscle fatigue
Morning headaches
Ear discomfort without infection
Neck tension
Teeth grinding or clenching
Every patient is different, and not every symptom is caused by TMJ dysfunction. During your visit, we’ll evaluate your jaw, muscles, bite, and overall oral health to better understand what’s contributing to your discomfort.
The jaw joints, facial muscles, teeth, and bite all work together. Because dentists routinely evaluate these structures, they are uniquely positioned to identify many conditions that may contribute to TMJ symptoms.
At Spring Dental, we take a comprehensive approach by evaluating how your bite functions, looking for signs of grinding or clenching, assessing muscle tenderness, and discussing your symptoms before recommending treatment. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution, we create an individualized treatment plan based on your examination findings.
No two cases of TMJ dysfunction are exactly alike. Depending on the cause of your symptoms, your treatment plan may include one or more conservative therapies designed to improve comfort and protect your oral health.
For patients who grind or clench their teeth during sleep, a custom nightguard is often one of the first treatment options recommended.
Unlike store-bought mouthguards, custom night guards are fabricated specifically for your bite, allowing for a more comfortable fit. They help protect your teeth from excessive wear while reducing the forces placed on the jaw joints during sleep
A custom appliance may be recommended if signs of nighttime grinding or clenching are contributing to your symptoms.
For selected patients with muscle-related TMJ concerns, EMFACE may be incorporated into a personalized treatment plan. EMFACE combines synchronized radiofrequency with high-intensity facial electrical stimulation (HIFES™) technology to simultaneously deliver radiofrequency energy while stimulating targeted facial muscles.
Because facial muscles play an important role in jaw function, our dentist may recommend EMFACE as part of a comprehensive approach for appropriate candidates. Whether EMFACE is recommended depends on your diagnosis, clinical findings, and treatment goals.
While published case reports have described improvements in facial muscle balance using EMFACE in selected patients, treatment outcomes vary, and additional research continues in this area.
